Das Lyon is a multi-media artist who specialises in sculpture, specifically in carving and assemblage. His passion for the arts extends into drawing, large-scale paintings and print works, with a keen interest in building sculptural installations. Lyon has participated in several group shows and has been a part of the first two Site Specific Land Art events in South Africa.
Fundamental to his artistic practice is his experience as a designer, including award-winning designs, from corporate offices to eco-homes.
Born in Scotland in 1976, Lyon studied strategic and industrial design at Helsinki, Finland, and completed his Bachelor of Arts with honours degree in furniture and industrial design at Kingston University in the UK. With a continued dedication to honing his skills as an artist, Lyon has studied with several top South African artists.
His work involves a synergy of archetypal forms that are inspired by his theosophical connection with the mystical aspect of life. He compares this inspiration with communal concerns like politics, society, culture and ecology to create a body of work that speaks to a modern existence.
Lyon’s art features richly worked materials, as he explores his subconscious for images of collective resonance. His creative process involves investigating certain questions, and balancing research with intuitive and emotive responses.
His current projects involve sculpted, carved and assembled masks of transformation, to be danced in ritual and documented on film. He lives in the Garden of Eden, Western Cape, South Africa.
